Main dive sites 1 – SHA’AB EL ERG Level: Easy • Depth: 15m • Photo: WA A beautiful horseshoe-shaped reef where pods of dolphins frequently pass along the outer reef or inside the lagoon. This is where we will do our check dive. Dolphins can often be observed either while diving or snorkelling. 2 – DUNRAVEN (WRECK) Level: Int./Adv. • Depth: 30m • Photo: WA This 80-metre British ship sank in 1876 after striking a reef near Sha’ab Mahmoud. Lying at 30 metres, the wreck is split into two sections with its hull upside down, now covered in corals. Divers can explore the open holds, home to surgeonfish, soldierfish and moray eels. 3 – RAS MOHAMED Level: Easy/Int. • Depth: 40m • Photo: Macro / WA A natural reserve at the southern tip of Sinai, marking the separation between the Gulfs of Aqaba and Suez. The meeting of these water masses generates strong currents. Numerous pelagic species patrol the dramatic drop-offs—large schools of barracudas, snappers and more. We will dive the park’s most iconic sites: Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef. The dive is a drift. We descend along Shark Reef and its sheer wall plunging to –800 m, then follow the drop-off towards Yolanda Reef. Expect spectacular coral formations covered with soft corals and gorgonians, giant morays, napoleon wrasses, turtles, groupers, and a huge school of batfish. The dive ends on the remains of the “Yolanda,” a Cypriot shipwreck from 1980 whose cargo—mainly bathtubs and sanitary ware still lies scattered along the plateau. 4 – JACKFISH ALLEY Level: Intermediate • Depth: 30m • Photo: WA An emblematic site of Ras Mohammed National Park, known for its spectacular underwater canyon. Diving from 5 to 30 metres offers a varied experience. Famous for its dense schools of jackfish. Frequent encounters with napoleon wrasses, barracudas and occasional grey reef sharks. The walls are covered with colourful soft corals and large gorgonians. Suitable for all levels, with generally moderate currents. 5/6 – SS THISTLEGORM Level: Intermediate • Depth: 30m • Photo: WA This British cargo ship sank on 6 October 1941 after being bombed by German aircraft while transporting ammunition and military supplies (trucks, cars, motorcycles, etc.). All these artefacts can still be seen inside the wreck. One of the most famous wrecks in the world. 7 – ULYSSES (WRECK) Level: Easy • Depth: 20m • Photo: Macro / WA Diving the Ulysses wreck at Sha’ab Abu Nuhas offers a fascinating immersion between 5 and 27 metres. Covered in corals, it shelters groupers, moray eels and schools of fish. Accessible to intermediate and advanced divers, it provides a captivating experience in the heart of maritime history. 8 – GUBAL ISLAND Level: Intermediate • Depth: 20m • Photo: WA The shallow reefs around Gubal Island offer exceptional visibility and host abundant marine life. Expect colourful schools of fish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, moray eels and rays. The coral formations are impressive, featuring a rich variety of soft and hard corals. Sha’ab Abu Nuhas – “Ship Cemetery” This west–east oriented reef lies dangerously close to the shipping route linking Europe and the Orient. Several vessels exiting the Strait of Gubal after the Suez Canal struck this fringe reef. On its northern side, five wrecks rest aligned. 9 – GIANNIS D (WRECK) Level: Easy • Depth: 20m • Photo: Macro / WA A 100-metre, 2,900-ton cargo vessel that sank in 1983. It was travelling between Croatia and Yemen, carrying timber. The wreck lies fractured but accessible, offering superb photographic opportunities. 10 – CARNATIC (WRECK) Level: Easy • Depth: 20m • Photo: Macro / WA A 90-metre, 1,800-ton sail-and-steam steamer that met its end on this reef in 1869. It rests between 18 and 24 metres. Its cargo of £32,000 in gold ingots was recovered—except for £8,000 still missing today. The hull is covered with hard corals, colourful soft corals and sponges. Inside, clouds of glassfish mingle with elegant lionfish. 11 – CARLESS REEF Level: Intermediate • Depth: 20m • Photo: WA An isolated coral reef and one of Hurghada’s most beautiful dive sites, featuring magnificent coral gardens. Drift diving between 10 and 20 metres. Excellent for spotting grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks and eagle rays. Spectacular soft corals and gorgonians. Large populations of reef fish, groupers and schools of barracudas. 12 – ABU KIFAN NORTH Level: Intermediate • Depth: 30m • Photo: WA Abu Kifan, offshore from Safaga, is a legendary Red Sea site. It combines a plateau at 20 metres with a dramatic wall plunging beyond 100 metres. Famous for its colourful corals and rich marine life, including barracudas, tunas and sometimes hammerhead sharks. Strong currents may occur, attracting big pelagics but requiring experience. Accessible by boat only, with exceptional visibility. 13 – PANORAMA REEF NORTH Level: Intermediate • Depth: 20m • Photo: WA One of the most impressive sites off Safaga.
